Happy Record Store Day To All

Today is national record store day! Please support your local store! It is dire and let the local companies continue to thrive in the music business that is now depleting by the second due to the digital era. I’ll tell you what music on vinyl is some of the best music you can hear and today you can find just what you want.
Stores like Newbury Comics and Bullmoose really thrive in entertainment music sales today, the local stores not so much, but if you have one from where you live it is a must to support them by all means! Whether you snag the latest and hottest record or the contemporary classics let Record Store Day be a place in your heart, or a place in your playlist, if you will.
Bands like the Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden still perform music within local music industries. Bands today still recognize their roots and show its appreciation by this, and the fans support them at all costs.

Thank You Project: Make a Difference Today

Helping out a good cause always feels good to the soul, and gains a moral compass within. These past few months I have been helping out an organization called THANK YOU PROJECT.

The goal of this Christian-based nonprofit organization is to significantly impact the lives of individuals in a rural area of Nigeria by:

  • Providing the equipment necessary to dig fresh water wells.
  • Establishing a scholarship fund for deserving students who cannot afford the cost of university tuition (only $2,000 per year).
  • Building a Church.

The THANK YOU PROJECT was brought forth out of a sense of gratitude, indebtedness, and thankfulness to God. We are all blessed in numerous ways and feel obligated to give back to humanity while we are able. Often, we forget how fortunate we are to have simple access to things like safe running water, the ability to go to school and further our education, and the option to practice whatever religion we choose and have a place to worship. Let us remind ourselves that others are not as fortunate.

The story itself is gratifying to where it all began.

It has been fourteen years since Charles and Ijeoma came to the United States here in New Hampshire, and they have added another daughter and two sons to their beautiful family. While they have built a successful and fulfilling life here, Charles feels uneasy. “I have done nothing for God, my community, and humanity. This is totally unacceptable. If I die today, I really do not have anything to show for all that God has done for me.”

With a renewed sense of purpose, Charles founded The THANK YOU Project in 2014 with a laser focused vision. With your help, he will give back to God by:

  • PROVIDING WATER by drilling water boreholes to provide clean drinking water to Ututu and Achi communities.
  • ESTABLISHING FULL COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS to indigent students in Nigeria.
  • BUILDING A CHURCH in his Nigerian community so others may give thanks to God.

Please, join Charles in bequeathing a legacy to humanity.

Cults and Classics On This Date March Movies

Spring is in full bloom, and what better time than now to unleash some classic and cult films that you all shall enjoy.

This particular list for March left more on the cult side than on the classics side. Needless to say some are signified classics, and deserve to be watched again and again. Some simply fell off the radar and were never mentioned again.

Repo Man: Release Date: March 2nd, 1984

One of the most 80’s movies of all time Repo Man is easily forgotten on the big scale, but the cult fans still adore this movie to pieces, and as they should. It has its charm and dazzle with its weirdness all packed in there.

This is Spinal Tap: Release Date: March 2nd, 1984

The best mockumentary ever made. This is Spinal Tap is timeless and endless on satirical comedy. There is just so much to observe and laugh about in this movie I lose it everytime when they pull out stonehenge.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=STHKFlO-zBw

The Jacket: Release Date: March 4th, 2005

It’s truly a deep sensation watching this movie. There is another life with another chance and how it all is portrayed. This writing is raw and just original. Something is just so unique and pure with this film. The story takes an uncanny approach with maybe a cliche predictability, but enjoying it for what it is, it’s a can’t miss.

The Big Lebowski: Release Date: March 6th, 1998

This is a cult movie fan’s pride and joy! Along with Eraserhead this is up there for being favorites from big cult movie fans. “The Dude” is personified as someone you just want to hangout while you string a couple games of bowl and sip on white russians. You can begin to see why there is a huge sensation with this movie. You may be someone who watches this and sees no appeal to it, and can’t find any of the hype about it, if that’s the case you may now realize why it’s a cult movie in the first place. There is even a religion based on this movie, called “Dudeists”. Alrighty then.

Limitless: Release Date: March 8th, 2011

An adventure, a trivial mind game with a pill to give you all that you want and more. I am a huge fan of this movie and I think the whole plot carried itself well. The concept is just sensational, it builds itself strongly. Thrilling and leaves you wanting more. Limitless has now became a TV show, and there is even a drug on the market currently called brain peak that calls itself just like the pill from limitless. Interesting..

Memento: Release Date: March 16th, 2000

This movie I feel has gone unnoticed entirely since its 2000 release, and I can’t understand why. Christopher Nolan’s second film and it is spell binding and revolutionary with the style it is presented. Lenny the main character can only remember up to five minutes and his term memory refreshes to the same place it started. If you haven’t seen this it is a must add, as the entire movie goes from end to the beginning in the opposite order. One of my all time favorites.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0vS0E9bBSL0

V For Vendetta: Release Date: March 17th, 2005

Within the ten years of this movie being made I’d say it is well on its way to becoming a classic. There’s just something epic and mysteriously telling about this movie that you could watch over and over.

Honorable mentions, Grand Budapest Hotel, White Men Can’t Jump, Zodiac and Above The Rim.

The Crazy Spring Break

This past spring break held lots of promise, and anticipation regarding a trip to New York City, and a get together with an old friend. En route to see Dr. Dog we were packed and ready to go for a solid weekend.

The trip to New York City was in place, and the room was ready to be checked in. I had one leftover spot in the room for one other person. Where could my best friend be within a year of seeing him? One of my best friends who originally lived in New Hampshire, and in the Milford, Nashua and Manchester region. Now living in Spokane Washington there wasn’t much of any other chances of seeing him. Excitement ran through me to the amount of anticipation I would have until I saw him. It was a big deal, not only cause of our friendship, but it’s New York, The Big Apple, endless spots to see, and to catch up. The days went by and the responses back to me grew more and more like my hopes had deceived me. Dillon finally replied two nights before the concert and told me was not going to make it. I was crushed, but I had to ask why of course. When I asked why I was dumbfounded to how the story actually went. Here is the story.

Dillon boarded for nh on a tuesday, it was a sunny warm day. He got there an hour early. The trip was supposed to go as early as monday, but it got delayed. So when i was back in line he saw a few people from the day before, like this girl edna and a redhead I didn’t know. When he got on the bus, he got to the way back seat and following up was this kid. He looked at him and asked if he could sit by him. He of course said yes. The question he asked Dillon were if he rapped. He told him that he did in fact rap, with a new album coming along the way. “What are the odds of that?” Dillon thought. After only an hour and a half of driving we broke down in Ritzville. It was Dillon and the same kid Jessen who he had just met, just playing around and talking about rap and life. The driver told them that they’d most likely be there all day. Dillon told him he had a place to be, that being New York. Dillon joked around some more about making a rap song with Jessen when they got to Portland. The odds were they’d stay in a hotel. There were a couple in front of them who just kept laughing hysterically at everything Jessen and I were saying. We were the life of the party. Bryce, another person Dillon met on the bus was a cool laid back kid with a southern accent, looked like An early 2000s skater he was heading to Arkansas. He was with a girl named ashley who was pretty, she was going to Oklahoma. Another kid named Anthony Dillon me, a black teen with a great smile was gone to Bakersfield California and Shawna was going to Walla Walla Washington. The bunch of them hung out on the bus all day, and ate some delicious snacks and told each other way too much of their life stories. After eight hours, they were finally heading to Oregon. All the while Jessen and Dillon continued to obsess over their rap track. After two more hours Dillon, Ash, Edna, Jessen, and Bryce got off. Shawna and Anthony headed on a different bus. It was midnight and we were at an empty Mcdonalds/gas station. Dillon set up his recording studio and it was then they began freestyling. Ash, Bryce and Edna loved and kept singing and laughing. They were at that gas for a total of six hours.. Altogether they all made the most of their wait as they continued to rap until the sun went down. Bryce bought a beer and the bus driver told him he couldn’t have it. So so with just a few sips he chucked it, and chucked it. At 3:00 am they got on the bus.
“This is where things go interesting.” Dillon told me. The bus went with a change of bus drivers and the previous driver Ben had just left. The new driver, changed everything. This new driver was a prick. The new driver pulled Bryce over and told him to empty his bag or he’s getting kicked off. After saying ok, he still kicked bryce off. So Dillon told the driver he’s getting fired and Bryce had a tear in his eyes. He begged for us to stay. So me and Jessen got kicked off too so they could stay. Then for fifteen more hours we were at a station until we got back to Spokane. The whole time they laughed, and ate pizza and told stories. Bryce had a good voice like Johnny Cash and sang the blues. It all felt like a movie, and time that “was supposed to happen”. Bryce was going to work for a carnival in Louisiana and hooked them up with a job. Dillon declined the offer and proceeded to go home, after missing New York, they then parted ways. Dillon mixed and edited the freestyles with all of them and it inspired him to make an entire EP album. Dillon has been working on the album all the previous week. A few days went by and reported the bus driver, and got him fired just like he told him he would.

All the while this story is something you read out of a book, and a story you could always look back on. While it is disappointing my friend Dillon couldn’t make it to the concert at least he experienced an adventure for the ages.

Interview with New Hampshire Artist Nicole Murphy Fish

I met with local New Hampshire artist Nicole Murphy Fish in Wilton on Thursday. She gave me some great information, on not only what it’s like to be an artist, and what her future goals are as well.
Nicole’s artistic avenue hasn’t gone unnoticed for she has gotten the awards on eBay for her art multiple times. She has painted wall sized murals, to index sized dog paintings. Her work primarily is sold on eBay. I sat down with her for a good one on one interview.
How long have you been creating art?
“I have been painting ever since I could hold a pen at age 2 or 3.”
Looks like it’s definitely something you’ve picked up and ran with, not only as a hobby but as a way of making money.
“Right, it is a good way for me to make money for my family on the side while I’m home with the kids. I have met lots of people in this line of work and I offer custom art paintings of pet portraits”
“I specialize in animals. I am a freelance artist and illustrator, I have been the last 25 years.”
What made you want to make animal art?
“I have always been an animal lover, I love just about every animal there is and when I was a kid I would always take in stray animals with me, that is until my mom wouldn’t let me.
“Well now you have all your animals, here you live with, from a dog to donkeys.”
“Yeah I am very thankful to be living my dream of living on a farm. The animals I help continues to inspire me it helps to know that I am also known as animal artist and illustrator. It is a dream of mine to illustrate children’s books. It can just be so tough with three kids to care for.”
Do you have any words of advice to people getting into this line of work?
“I recommend if someone has a talent similar or if they’re looking for some extra money to try it out and see the opportunities may open up from it. Gotta give it a try”

Nicole has been selling her work on eBay since 2003 and has created a great following. If you want to see more of her work follow her Facebook page, “Fancy Animal Art Studio” and find her on eBay under “Colie1978”.

Social Media as We Know It

The ownership, and righteousness of what people’s Facebooks, and twitters hold is unfathomable to what things were intended in the first place. Social media can at times show what way you learn just by what you share and post. Depending on how much of a stand you make with that, strong opinion, or open minded, people may be more wanting to take the spiral of silence. To simply not argue, and create tension in the first place is the norm. Wanting to debate these days isn’t civilized and educated that you would want it to be. Social media also creates distractions, and gives forms of brain training to keep accessing the same pin codes over and over. Distractions and addictions go hand in hand for me. For there to be something you’re doing by multi-tasking, and working the amount of your addiction wants you to reach for the phone, and respond. Therefore by multi tasking it seems as if it is a one sided affair that is gained by on how fast you can finish your assignment to answer your phone, update FB twitter, etc.

Facebook being the biggest does hold the amount of what we want to see, and by our civil values we can choose what we want to see. However being in that bubble I don’t think is a good thing. Facebook gives you that choice, but there will always be that somebody to rain on your parade, and go against your view, so what is it that we are really communicating? Man, if only the real world was like that, I wish I could block out some people. Social media gives and demands us these powers that we didn’t have so much of before. Being masked behind the screen can deface the humanness of what it is we do not want to face.

The infatuation of social media, leaves this generation on Facebook for an average of ten hours a day, and that may not go well with an impressionable mind. From my own experience, social media in large quantities can trigger anxiety, and feelings of loneliness.

What seems a bit intimidating to me, is that there really is no sights of what the long term effects may lead to. Who knows if what we are all consumed in is leading to any brain alterations, and complexities in ways of thinking. Going back to the spiral of silence, it seems as though we are wired to rethink what we were going to say.

It seems as though the more we progress with technology the more we rely on it.With a society that is fully consumed day by day on media for ever second of the given day it seems to be a handful. The media consumption is because of the second biggest industry in the world. Brands, ads, creations all around you it correlates much to the electronics that are subliminal. They know how to own their customers and how they can get them to buy what they want. My point being, now that we are all on our screens, of any kind, we consume so much of what is around us. So much so that we may not be able to decipher from what is reality and what is not. There may even be a correlation to the education,  and what we are taught. As a human being to lead through social media blindly is a bad choice.

Being aware is the key to it essentially. Otherwise the social media world will leave you in a rapid discharge, by fantasy and by what the person next to you is constantly doing. The amount of time on Facebook in a given day is staggering, checking the informative notifications, the chats and the interesting articles that you choose to follow. I think we all may have thought there would be so much more at this point though in the future. We all might have figured we would have been in a totally different world, but instead we are in a clustered, disorganized society. We all thought we’d have flying cars, and regularly scheduled trips to the moon, but we are left with is our thoughts. Our thoughts show us a connection between us all as a community, but is this always a good thing?

-Jake.

Happy Predictions! The Nominations That Deserve A Win

untitled
The 88th Academy Awards about to air this Sunday, We have many people ready to grab some chilled drinks and swarm their friends coaches to sit and see who did it big this time around. Brushing aside all the negativity about the Oscars being all white (Which why would Chris Rock the king of black comedy host a racist event?) This year is star studded and glamorous as usual. My one problem is that the pickings are slim. I personally feel like last year was one of the best years for film we have had in a while and the fact that they are only choosing 5 nominees out of a possible 10 is pretty skimpy and something that should reign more controversy than it actually does.
We here at IndieBall take all aspects of film seriously. From the casting and directing to behind the scene cuts including visuals, sound scores, and all around production ascetics. We have a higher demand for films that are on a grande stage like the Academy Awards. We try not to nitpick or demean the film; however we do want the film to be the best of its category, so we will tell our thoughts blunt and crucially on if they lived up to the hype or if it busted.
Now before we get into the predictions, I would like to (with arms wide open) give some insights on the prospects that just barley missed the list. Here, Folks are some Honorable Mentions
Straight Outta Compton told the jaw dropping, odd defying story of the first ever Gangster Rap Group, the notorious NWA.  From racial prejudice in the underrated run down streets of Compton to the riots that changed America, Director F Gary Gray (Friday, Law Abided Citizen) captured what it was like to be a young black male in a corrupt economy and how hard the men of NWA fought not only for their lives, but for their music and for a voice. From Easy E to Dre, Cube to Yella and Ren. These boys outlasted brutal cops, a hateful mainstream culture and the shady industry. This movie was a hard hitting biopic that (maybe didn’t give us the entire truth) but at least shed light on the boys from the hood who started an entire generation of music. On the subject of Straight Outta Compton – Jason Mitchell – Who portrayed the late Eric Wright (Easy E) was a spitting image of the gangster icon who took America by storm and broke the heart of Millions with a devastating yet inspirational battle with HIV. The movie is a tribute not only to NWA, but to Mr. Wright. Jason Mitchell handsdown killed it.. And the fact that he wasn’t nominated is something to think about. He did Easy E justice and brought some deeper profound light on a almost forgotten icon. Sure Straight Outta Compton was nominated for Best Original Screenplay, but I feel like it deserves more than that.
One last Honorable Mention, without a doubt in my mind, is The Hateful Eight. There are certain things that get overhyped and dragged out for good reasons, and this movie is one of them. Anything Tarintino touches is a masterpiece and this movie should have been up there for Best Picture. The grimy realism, starstudded cast and intricate story entwined with Post Civil War history and impeccable dialogue. This movie was shafted because the awards weren’t thinking clearly. Only choosing 8 out of a possible 10 noms.
Now. Without further ado….. I will tell you (not just the predictions) but the standouts who I think should take the cake without any trouble at all
Best Picture: The Revenant
I will be the first to say I did not care for Bird Man whatsoever. I was impressed with the Cinematography but the story was awkward and most of the actors in my opinion (Norton, Keaton) Were washed up throw aways. However, Director Alejandro González Iñárritu truly did something impossible. He took his follow up film and crushed expectations. There is so much to say about this groundbreaking project that I feel like I can’t even scratch the surfaces. I said before that The Hateful Eight had glorious cinematography.. But nothing can compare to what Inarritu and DOF Emmanual Lubezki had accomplished. It makes Tarintino’s western masterpiece look like a homemade movie. Looking at all the long drawn out scenes filmed in natural lighting, you wonder how they pulled off the remarkable chorography of constant movement. A beautiful, heart pounding revenge tale with a cast whose dedication and accuracy of potrayal is insurmountable, The Revenant is a story that will leave you saying HOW THE FUCK DID THEY DO THAT. This movie will win without question
Best Actor In A Leading Role: Matt Damon
We all know the tragedy.. Leo has never ceased an Oscar win. I thought he had it back with the Wolf Of Wall Street, but he just barley missed. However, The Revenant he played Hugh Glass, the furtrapper who lost his son to the dang murderous Fitsgerald.. He didnt do the job justice. Yes, he was thrown through the gauntlet, and he delivered some solid lines and movements; but his all around performance was meh. Here is my initial issue. Leo just played Leo.. I dont know how to explain it. There are actors out there like his co-star Tom Hardy, or Christian Bale who can just remove every aspect about themselves and dedicate it to there charecter. Making you almost forget that they even played in the movie. Leo, on the other hand.. Never seems to fully commit. Wheter he is trying to hard, or he isnt finding a connection.. He just doesnt go the extra mile. Matt Damon on the other hand, blew me away in The Martian, A Science Fiction movie based on Andy Weirs book of the same title.  Damon plays Mark Watney, an astronaut who is left for dead and struggles to fight for survival on a foreign planet. Matt Damons transformation into Weirs charecter is beautiful and unique. Delivering heart stinging lines, and constantly on que with the comic relief. You want him to see home again, and its worth while seeing him give anything for the cost to be back.  Though this is a science fiction, which hardly gets nominated.. This project was the right fit for Damon. Bring Oscar Home, Damon.
Best Actress In A Role: Saoirse Ronan
My gut wanted to say Charolette Rampling whose potrayal in,45 years, as a wife in a crumbling marriage who delivered a unrelinguishing performance. But when I think harder about it, the more I see Ronan’s performance flicker in my mind. Ronan ceaselessly gives a evergrowing resonating performance throughout the entirety of Brooklyn as an Irish Immigrant named Ellis who has a captivating battle between what she wants for her life, be it the new opportunities of the new country, or what she feels like she has to do back in her homeland. A heavy hitting example of acting from the young breakout actress
Actor and Actress in a Supporting Role: Tom Hardy and Rachel McAdams
Yes Christian Bale, The Oscar Slayer did it again and just demolished all expectations.. But Tom Hardy, who portrayed John Fitzgerald, the ruthless murderous man in The Revenant delivered a role that I didnt think was possible from his caliber. He amazed me in Warrior, and did a hell of a job in Legend but what he did in The Revenant is unbeatable. From the accent to the body language. He will give you chills and will keep all the attention drawn on him in every scene he offers. Along side Will Poulter who was equally ravishing, Hardy out performs the star Leo and just gives a show of a lifetime. No matter how evil he is in this film, he is a vill
ain you will enjoy despising. Tremendous.
On the other side. I feel like this is an unlikely longshot.. But out of all the ladies, veteran actress Rachel McAdams in Spotlight deserves this award the most. All the women in this category shined bright. Jennifer Jason Leigh is a riot and deserves this too.. But for an all around deliver in a outstanding movie. McAdams deserves this.
Best Director: Alejandro González Iñárritu
I need no descriptions for this one. I raved about him and his film throughout the entire review. He crushed it. Keep em coming man.
Of course there are more categories that are of importance so here is a quick list of the remainders we would like to see bring home the gold
Cinematography: The Revenant
Screenplay: Straight Outta Compton
Editing: Mad Max Fury Road
Production Design: The Martian
Music: Bridge Of Spies
